Six Layers (and Knowing When to Stop)

Since October, I’ve been working on a monthly process, painting a large canvas, then covering it over to begin again.

It’s intentional. Each layer represents a feeling or experience, painted over by the next, like life, where so much sits beneath the surface.

Some months I returned the canvas to white; others I worked straight over what was there. Each layer has taken on a different style, reflecting both the moment and how I’ve changed over time. It has been a very interesting experience to paint without reference to the underneath layers and with a specific thing in mind. Also it is the largest canvas I have painted so far!

I originally planned for seven layers, but when I finished the latest one, I knew it was complete at six.

The final layer was always meant to represent now, with everything else held quietly beneath it. And suddenly, there it was.

Finished. I’m very happy with that.

(You can see the six layers below, five hidden, one revealed and videos of the process over on Instagram.)
