The Call You Can’t Ignore (and Why It Matters)

I was watching Moana at the weekend with my granddaughter. Every time, one scene in particular stays with me: Moana standing on the beach, staring out to the horizon, knowing she has to go beyond the reef.

She doesn’t know exactly what she’ll find out there. She just feels the pull. Others tell her to stay, to be content where she is, but the call doesn’t go away.

Isn’t that the beauty of creativity? There’s always this exciting pull toward the unknown: a canvas waiting for the paint, a sketchbook full of blank pages, an idea that knocks, even when you’re unsure where it might lead. It can feel a bit risky, maybe even foolish, but that’s precisely where life unfolds its most vibrant possibilities.

What I love most is how Moana’s journey is not about escaping her world, but about understanding it more deeply. By answering the call, she learns who she is and where she belongs.

The classic hero’s journey doesn’t have to go any further than your studio.

That’s the gift of making or experiencing art: We may not know where it leads, but in following, we find ourselves.

My wonderfully messy studio!

  1. I’m a firm believer that authentic creativity brings us closer to who we are, so very much a call worth answering — with me, it’s writing… and I like your featured image, it’s bold and evocative.
