How a Messy Accident Rekindled My Artistic Flow

Yesterday, I experienced what could have been a minor studio disaster. While tidying up before a painting session, I knocked over an entire bottle of green ink. For a moment, I froze. Not so long ago, this kind of accident would have been devastating. I would have spiralled into self-criticism, lamenting the waste of ink, the mess, and my apparent clumsiness. I might even have shed a few tears.

Disaster!

But yesterday, I realised just how much progress I’ve made in silencing those inner critics. Instead of panic or frustration, I found myself pausing to think about what I could do with this unexpected opportunity.

As the deep green ink began pooling and spreading across my desk, the thought of grabbing a cloth to clean it up crossed my mind. Then, inspiration struck. I reached for several paintings that were in progress but stuck, scraps of watercolour paper, and my sketchbook. Over the next 20 minutes, I let creativity take over. I dripped, wiped, and scrawled the ink across a dozen surfaces, embracing the chaos and letting the ink dictate the direction.

The results? Two paintings that had been frustratingly stuck suddenly took on a new energy. Others gained added layers and depth, while fresh bases emerged for future works. What began as a potential disaster turned into a burst of creativity that not only salvaged the ink but also reignited my artistic flow.

This experience reminded me of something vital about art and life: progress often requires embracing the unexpected and letting go of perfection. Sometimes, the most dramatic actions—whether it’s upending a bottle of ink or making bold, unplanned choices—can lead to breakthroughs.

I’m not suggesting you spill an entire bottle of ink every time you’re stuck, but the principle holds true. When things don’t go to plan, look for the opportunity hidden within the mess. It might surprise you.

PS Now off to buy a replacement bottle! 🙂
